Sharon E. Cooper: Production Manager, Peace and Ashes |
Born: Massachusetts. • Raised: Virginia • College: Longwood College in Farmville, VA. • Chosen Career: Playwright. • Day Job: "It's difficult to keep up with my 'day job.' My schedule is a little different every day and night. I teach yoga four times a week, spinning (yes, on a bike) once a week, and toning twice a week. I tutor. I direct two plays a year at the Browning School for Boys. I write a newsletter for a WISTA, a Women's International Shipping and Trading Association, four times a year. Though it doesn't meet daily, I'm active with the National Coalition Building Institute, which is an important part of my life. This organization works to build bridges between groups. I feel lucky that as an artist, I enjoy my 'day job'--all of them. I find that there's huge overlap in everything that I do, and my 'day jobs' influence my playwriting. There's no doubt about it. It's all about seaching for and trying to bring more peace and more hope into a world that sometimes doesn't feel peaceful or hopeful. And it's the small moments that make it worthwhile--a woman who says she used deep relaxation to relax during a cat scan; students who say working on your play was the most important influence of their year--things like that."

So I packed my bags and boarded an Amtrak to the Big City - never looked back!" • Other Theatrical Skills: "A jack of all trades - I have acted, written, designed, directed, managed and produced for the theatre in New York City. Michelle Lane: Actress, Peace |
Born and Raised: Los Angeles area • College: University of Arizona in Tucson, BFA Musical Theatre • Most Recent Role: "Mala," the courtesan, in the workshop production of SIDD, the musical at Manhattan Theatre Source. Based on the Hermann Hesse novel, Siddhartha. • Day Job: Jewelry Designer. • Time in NYC: "I woke up one Thursday morning in the final week of Me & My Girl in L.A. and my first thought was, 'What the hell am I doing here????' So, I leaped off the sofa (I was staying at a friend's house during the run) and got on the computer and bought a one-way ticket to move to NY a week later. I left everything familiar -- my family, a boyfriend, what was my HOME to be here. And from the day I got here, it was as if all the stars were aligned! For the first time in my life, I felt like I made the right decision at exactly the right moment. I will never move back. I absolutely love NY!" • Dream Gig: "Kate Monster/Lucy T. Slut" in Avenue Q and "Millie" in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Also, "Rosalind" in As You Like It and "Isabella" in Measure for Measure. • Me in 3 Words: Real, Wacky, Sweet • First Show: FAME. • Other Skills: "For a while I considered pursuing a recording career. I was going to go the country route and wrote a ton of country songs. The guy who was interested in signing me wanted me to do mainstream stuff and I wasn't interested -- what the hell was I thinking?!" • The Negative: "The rejection and competition is still alive in this profession. I also hate that I am constantly forced to be a toothpick. I wish we could all be judged solely on our talent -- but that will never happen, unfortunately. So, diet, diet, diet. Being Italian, that is definitely my least favorite part of this profession."

Lauren Reinhard: Assistant Director/Stage Manager, Peace |
Born and Raised: Allentown, PA (like the Billy Joel song). • College: Long Island University. • Most Recent Gig: Damnee Manon, Sacree Sandra by Michele Tremblay. "It was my directing honors thesis at college for the Post Theatre Company. It was by far the most challenging show that I've ever tackled directorially, but extremely beautiful and giving." • Time in NYC: About 2 months. "I came to continue my work in theatre, and I stay (and probably always will) because even though I've traveled to a lot of places around the world, New York is absolutely my favorite place on earth even though I got hit by a car 2 weeks after I got here. That was kind of funny." • Me in 3 Words: Intuitive, Expressive, Independent. • Dream Gig: "To have a theatre company where I can direct new work that I feel is important to put into the world and work that I feel passionate about." • First Gig: "I started in theatre in Jr. High as an actor. Theatre should be about the work, not only about the money."
|

|
Leigh Williams: Actress, Peace |
Born: Oceanside, Long Island. • Raised: "I moved to Plano, Texas when I was ten because my dad's company relocated." • College: B.A. in theatre arts at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY • Most Recent Role: "Mariana" in Measure for Measure and "Margaret" in Much Ado About Nothing in rep at Riverside Shakespeare Festival in Iowa City. • Day Job: "Senior Secretary" at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health (Department of Epidemiology). "I assist the Department Administrator, and that includes everything from copying/faxing/answering phones to helping to put grant proposals together for our faculty members and maintaining personnel databases and directories. The highlight is that my commute is about a 3-minute walk, and I don't have to cross any streets on the way!" • Time in NYC: 4 years. • Dream Gig: "I would love to be a resident company member with a regional theatre like American Players Theatre or Oregon Shakes and just do really good work with really good people and be paid a living wage to do so--simple as that." • Me in 3 Words: Introspective, Energetic, Curious. • Favorite Thing About Acting: "Catharsis. The challenge of inhabiting an emotional/physical/psychological world that may be very different from your own, along with the satisfaction that comes with achieving it, I find very freeing and therapeutic. That, and it's a helluva lot of fun." • Least favorite: "It doesn't pay very well, at least so far! And auditioning pretty much sucks, at least the monologue part of it. I've never been good at delivering monologues into space or to a wall. It's artificial, and in my opinion, not a very good measure of who can act and who can't." • On Theatre: "It's enticingly elusive. Whatever happens on stage or between the audience and the actors during any one performance will never happen that way again. Theatre refuses to be pinned down or captured for posterity. It lives and breathes at a particular moment in a particular time and then vanishes. It helps you learn to let go of things."
